Penns Creek: World-Class Trout Fishing
For fly anglers, Penns Creek is the main attraction. This limestone-influenced freestone stream runs through Penns Valley and is widely regarded as one of the best trout fisheries in the eastern United States.
What makes it special:
- Green Drake hatch in late May/early June draws anglers from across the country
- Excellent wild brown trout population
- Catch-and-release sections maintain quality fishing
- Scenic valley setting with easy wade access
The stretch from Coburn downstream through the "narrows" is particularly popular. Spring and early summer are peak seasons, but fall fishing can be excellent when crowds thin out.
Poe Valley and Poe Paddy State Parks
Tucked into the mountains south of Aaronsburg, these two connected state parks offer camping, hiking, and genuine backcountry solitude.
Poe Valley State Park:
- 25-acre lake for fishing and swimming
- Campground with tent and RV sites
- Surrounded by Bald Eagle State Forest
- Accessed via scenic (but rough) mountain roads
Poe Paddy State Park:
- Smaller, more primitive park along Penns Creek
- Connected to Poe Valley by the Mid State Trail
- Popular put-in/take-out for creek tubing
- Historic railroad tunnel that's now a hiking path
> The drive from Aaronsburg to Poe Valley takes about 20 minutes, but the narrow mountain roads make it feel like you're entering true wilderness. These parks are never crowded — even on summer weekends.
Bald Eagle State Forest
The 193,000-acre Bald Eagle State Forest surrounds much of Penns Valley's southern and eastern edges. This is a massive recreational resource right in Aaronsburg's backyard.
Activities:
- Hiking: Mid State Trail passes through, plus numerous forest roads and unmarked paths
- Mountain biking: Forest roads provide challenging terrain
- Hunting: Deer, turkey, and bear seasons draw hunters from across the state
- Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter
- Wildlife viewing: Black bears, eagles, and diverse bird populations
Hiking Highlights
The best hikes accessible from Aaronsburg:
- Mid State Trail (Poe Paddy section): Moderate difficulty, follows Penns Creek through a forested gorge. About 4 miles one-way.
- Bear Meadows Natural Area: A boreal bog and old-growth forest area, roughly 30 minutes away. Unique ecosystem for Pennsylvania.
- Snyder-Middleswarth Natural Area: Virgin hemlock and white pine forest with an easy loop trail. One of the few old-growth stands left in the state.
- Tussey Mountain ridge trails: Accessible from several trailheads within 20–30 minutes of Aaronsburg.

Practical Tips
- Cell service is unreliable in the state forest and parks — tell someone where you're going
- Mountain roads to Poe Valley and Poe Paddy are rough and not maintained in winter
- Hunting season (especially rifle deer season in late November) is very active — wear blaze orange if hiking
- Tick awareness is essential April through October — Lyme disease is prevalent in Centre County
- Water sources in the backcountry should be treated before drinking
For a community of 600 people, Aaronsburg has access to a genuinely remarkable range of outdoor recreation. This is one of its strongest selling points for anyone considering a move to Penns Valley.
